Vasai Art-Culture SCULPTURES
Vasai Art-Culture SCULPTURE

The first known sculpture artist in Vasai is Annasaheb Phadke. His exhibited work of soft wax statues in the 1925’s was widely accepted but it was nothing compared to the accolades he received for the Bal Gaangadhar Tilak statue at Mumbai Chowpati in 1933.

The second person bringing fame to Vasai as a sculpture artist was Dushyant Hatkar. He was solely responsible for the large and many statue props used in films like Baiju Bawara and Bharatbhet. Even as a student he had proved his merit by standing first in all his academic years at the JJ School of arts. In 1942, Dushyant Hatkar started his own studio Kala Niketan. With an eye for detail and a passion for perfection he created many master pieces that can be seen in the living rooms of many in Vasai.

Murtikars like- the Kadu brothers, Krishna Raut, Bhalchandra Raut, Hazare, Chintaman Rau, Nilu Raut, Mohan Kadu have been for years creating the Ganpati murtis for the Ganesh festival. There works are also highly appreciated and considered important.

Among the contemporary artist, Shekar Wechlekar is a known name. His statues of Shivaji, Savarkar, Maharana Pratap, Dr. Hedgewar are proofs to his talent.

Shri Datta Samant, another popular and regional sculpture artist has taught Bronze Casting Art in the JJ School of Arts after graduating from this same institute. He has to his credit work done all over Maharashtra along with regional assignments like the Ambedkar statue at Nalasopara, The Dayanand Mahapankar statue at New English School, Vijay Ajgaonkar Smarak and the Shivaji statue opposite Vasai Court.

Cast Sculptor artist brothers Rock and Ronald Sequera have also brought further fame to Vasai. There art is also not bonded by religion hence they have created some of the best statues of Hindu gods and goddesses along with church alters which have found place in the Vatican church.
The fine restoration work of the BMC building’s ceiling after the fire of 2000 was also the handy work of these two brothers. An interest in cosmic sciences has also propagated these brothers in creating a model of the universe including planets and the zodiac signs. There sons follow the tradition and Vasai should expect many more things of arts coming from this gifted family.

Along with this masters there is also a different and unique sculpture art form existing in Vasai known as Paper Sculptures and is different from the Japanese Origami. It was first introduced in Vasai by Hemchandra Raje and his work on this subject is considered a must see part of Vasai’s Art History. It is exhibited at Gumpha near the Janaki theater in Vasai
